It is a nice coming of age novel with archetypes as side charakter: the experienced good- heartde though tough-talking outcast who takes care of the unexperienced but gifted youngster. A loyal slitear earthing the melodramatic naivity of a teenage boy trying to find out who he is while at the same time trying to rescue his family. Entertaining with a kind of happy end, forseeable but not boring if you don't expect too much.I enjoyed reading it and will continue the series because it calms me after a busy day and makes me smile a lot bevore I go to sleep.

Bei allen Göttern, ich habe seit Ewigkeiten kein so famoses Buch gelesen!! Seit ich die Greatcoats-Reihe gelesen habe, hat Sebastien de Castell zu meinen Lieblingsautoren gehört, weil er einfach weiß, wie man richtig gute Bücher schreibt. Absolut sympathische Helden, die nie nachgeben und nach jeder obligatorischen Runde Selbstzweifel noch mehr Stärke finden, toughe Unterstützung bei Familie & Freunde, Witz und fesselnde Dialoge, unvorhersehbare Abenteuer ... All das, was ich an den anderen Bücher von de Castell so liebe, trifft auch auf sein neues Buch "Spellslinger" zu 😊 Rechnet schon mal damit, dass ich jetzt wahrscheinlich in den Fan-Modus umschalte und mich hier in (positive) Rage schreiben werde.Ich habe das Buch in unglaublichem Tempo durchgelesen, weil ich Kellen's und Ferius' Welt einfach nicht verlassen wollte! Kellen ist der Sohn des mächtigen Magier Ke'heops, aber im Gegensatz zu seiner talentierten jüngeren Schwester Shalla verliert Kellen seine Magie - eine Ungeheuerlichkeit für seine Leute, die Jan'Tep (Sha'Tep = Menschen ohne Magie, die wie Sklaven unterdrückt werden, darunter Kellens eigener Onkel Abydos) Die Jan'Tep kennen 7 Elemente der Macht, die sie durch Handbewegungen, Worte und speziallen Tätowierungen bändigen (ein ausgeklügeltes Magiesystem, genau wie es sich gehört für Fantasy-Bücher über Magier!). Dann gibt es noch andere Völker, und "Volklose" wie die Argosi-Frau Ferius, die ungebunden durch die Wüsten zieht und mit rasiermesserscharfen Spielkarten kämpft. Spielkarten. SPIELKARTEN, das ist so cool 😠Da kämpfen Magier mit Iron-, Blood- oder Ember-Magie und Ferius haut alle um mit Spielkarten!Mögt ihr Wortgefechte und Sarkasmus? Ich bin für so was immer zu haben, weshalb mir der Protagonist Kellen sofort ans Herz gewachsen ist: ein Außenseiter, der ja nicht seine Schwächen zugeben will, und sich ganz auf seine Intelligenz und trockenen Humor verlässt. Deshalb ist es umso amüsanter, zu lesen, wie seine scheinbare Ruhe an der pelzigen Fassade des sprechenden, höllisch unverschämten "Squirrel Cat" Reichis zerberstet 😂 Reichis ist ein wenig wie der Waschbär Rocket aus ,,Guardians of the Galaxy", nur halt eine übergroße Mischung aus Katze und Eichhörnchen. Ein Biest. Ein umwerfendes Biest, das mich immer wieder zum Lachen gebracht hat!Aber meine absolute Heldin ist nach wie vor Ferius! Ich habe sogar eine Fanart von ihr gemalt, das ist heftig ... Von ihrem ersten Auftritt an hat sie mich begeistert: wie sie sich einfach über alle Regeln hinwegsetzt, ihre Spielkarten durch die Luft schleudert und alle anderen in den Schatten stellt. Ich verehre sie schlichtweg. Es gibt im Englischen dieses eine Wort, sassy, das Ferius am besten beschreibt, wenn sie nicht gerade ihre philosophische Seite zeigt: 'When you see the world outside your home town, outside the walls you were brought up to see, then you discover that you almost never know if you're doing the right thing. One action, brave and true, leads to war and destruction. Another, craven and greedy, leads to peace and prosperity.'Okay, ich muss endlich zum Schluss kommen, da ich ohnehin ja weiß, dass niemand gerne lange Rezensionen liest (ich mag solche allerdings) 😅 "Spellslinger" ist aber halt der reinste Wahnsinn, bei dem man nie vorhersehen kann, wie sich die Geschichte entwickeln wird. Betrug und Freundschaft, Wahrheiten und Spiele - wenn "Spellslinger" schon so grandios ist, wie wird dann die Fortsetzung "Shadowblack" nur sein?! Ich sage nur: L E S E N, wenn ihr euch gerne in magische Welten entführen lassen wollt und auf der Suche nach Außergewöhnlichem seid!
First of all, I already read the Greatcoats series, the first book series of Sebastien de Castell, and I absolutely adored it. That is why my expectations were a little too high for Spellslinger, even though I tried to begin reading with an open mind.The plot was not as fast-paced as I had hoped, but it was still well written. Sometimes I felt like there was no direction, no clear goal. Most times I had to let myself be rushed along by the story to see where we would end up. Otherwise the story was excellently executed and I was always highly entertained.About the main characters: Kellen, the protagonist, is a sixteen-year-old boy, who is supposed to be extra clever, at least able to outsmart the average of his clan members. I didn't always get that vibe, especially not that cunning tricking that I had been hoping for, but at least he was a believable character that I could relate to. Also, plus points for sassy-ness. His companion, the squirrel cat Reichis, came in way too late in the book (at least in my opinion). While he was like the extra pinch of salt that turned the book from good to better, he was still a character with a family and backstory and everything. That impressed me a lot, since he is a talking animal with a habit of insulting everyone and everything. My third favorite character was obviously Ferius Parfax, whose first action in this book was to save Kellen's life. She ist the kind of strong female character I'm always looking for and she didn't open only Kellen's eyes to a world beyond the Jan'tep, she enabled me as a reader to see beyond. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of her in the sequel.To conclude, I have to admit that there weren't nearly as many con-game-duels as I had hoped and the rest was almost always non-magic-action, but those are just my personal preferences. I still loved the book and I'm definitely going to continue reading this series!
