Ethan ist ein ganz normaler Teenager, doch dann verliebt er sich und alles wird anders. Erst sitzt er nur neben Jill genannt "Spiderweb" im Bus, doch dann fängt er an mehr für sie zu empfinden. Dabei gibt es aber ein großes Problem, denn Jill ist eine Außenseiterin. Dafür gibt es zwei Gründe: Zum einen ist sie immer von Spinnen umgeben, was ihr den Spitznamen "Spiderweb" eingebracht hat, und jedes Mal, wenn Gefühle in ihr hochkochen ... nunja... explodiert ihr Gesicht. Und ihr Vater muss es dann wieder zusammen flicken. Als sie beginnt für Ethan mehr zu empfinden, fängt ihr Gesicht an zu blubbern und es explodierte einfach. Doch sie mag Ethan sehr. Trotz der Narben empfindet Ethan genau das Gleiche für Spiderweb, doch er weiß nicht so ganz genau, wie er mit der Situation umgehen soll. Als er sie dann in einer stillen Minute küsst, explodiert sie wieder, doch das ist nicht das einzige Problem, denn Ethan wird bei ihrem Kuss recht stark verletzt. Davon merkt er nur nichts, da das Blut von Spiderweb als Betäubung wirkt. Man kann Ethans Gesicht aber nicht so lassen, und deshalb nimmt Jill ihn mit zu sich nach Hause. Ihr Vater soll sie selbst und auch Ethan wieder herrichten. Dabei nimmt er Ethan zur Seite, denn dieser soll wissen, dass wenn sich Spiderweb in jemanden verleibt, dass sie sich richtig in ihn verliebt. Und zwar für immer. Und da gibt es noch eine Kleinigkeit, die den beiden erzählen muss, bevor sie Sex miteinander haben werden, denn es müssen gewisse Vorbereitungen getroffen werden...Wertung:Neben "The Haunted Vagina" ist dies hier der wohl abgedrehteste Roman von Carlton Mellick, denn das, was hier dargestellt ist, kann man sich doch eigentlich gar nicht ausdenken, oder? Ein Mädchen, welches bei Empfindungen von Liebe explodiert. Fast wie in dem "Die Ärzte-Song: Meine Ex-(plodierte) Freundin. Das macht dieses Buch hier mit Absicht total strange und auch recht komisch, und auch mit geringeren Englischkenntnissen kann man dieses Buch hier gut verstehen. Oben ist die Handlung grob zusammengefasst, aber es gibt noch weitere Merkwürdigkeiten, die mit Absicht hier nicht erwähnt wurden. Mit seinen 106 Seiten im DIN A5-Format (und damit leider etwas kleiner als seine Vorgänger) ist es auch zwischendurch gut lesbar. Die Geschichte ist natürlich überschaubar bei einer solchen Seitenlänge, aber das ist man von Carlton Mellick gewohnt.Ob es nun irgendwann übersetzt wird oder nicht ist mir ziemlich egal, denn ich hab mich hier prächtig unterhalten gefühlt. Im Bizarro Genre ganz ganz großes Tennis und in meiner persönlichen Rangliste die Nummer 2 hinter dem oben genannten Werk.
Nach "Die Kannibalen von Candyland" war dieses hier mein zweites Buch von Mellick. Candyland hat mir schon extrem gut gefallen, aber dieses Buch hat nochmal einen drauf gesetzt!Die Geschichte ist mega witzig, ein klein wenig romantisch-verträumt und insgesamt einfach nur total abgefahren! Vor allem das Ende hat mir total gut gefallen: kein richtiges Happy End. Einerseits tragisch, aber doch irgendwie schön. Muss man einfach gelesen haben :)Zur englischen Sprache: ich fand das Buch sehr leicht verständlich, das ist also auch für Ungeübte bestimmt gut lesbar. Mit der Word Wise Funktion am Kindle wird's sogar nochmal einfacher.

Once it happens, theres no escape.Ethan, der Protagonist, ist 13 Jahre alt und hat sich in das merkwürdigste Mädchen der Schule verliebt. Sie wird von allen nur Spiderweb genannt. Es gehen Gerüchte um, dass sich Spinnen in ihrer Gegenwart wohl fühlen. Ethan lässt sich aber nicht davon abschrecken und ganz langsam nähert er sich ihr an. Sie ist schüchtern, redet kaum, doch irgendwann verabreden die beiden sich außerhalb der Schule in einem Dairy Queen (US-Schnellrestaurantkette) und die Merkwürdigkeiten fangen für Ethan explosionsartig an.Feeling awkward just staring at her, I opened my mouth to speak. But before I could tell her how pretty I thought she looked, her face exploded.Blood and chunks of flesh splattered against me,getting in my mouth and all over my clothes. Her lips stuck in my hair like two wads of chewing gum. Her nose dropped into her lap. One of her eyeballs landedin my strawberry sundae.When I rubbed the gore from my eyes, I saw only a red mess left on her skull. One eyeball looking back at me in shock. She didn't say anything. She just grabbedher pieces of face and ran away, crying.Die Geschichte um Ethan und Spiderweb ist verdammt niedlich, wenn auch recht blutig. Mellick hat hier liebevoll ein kleine, wirklich putzige Liebesgeschichte zusammengezimmert, welche wohl kaum bizarrer sein könnte. Es gibt jede Menge Explosionen, hochkochende Gefühle, Chirurgie á la Frankenstein, im Keller lebende Menschenhunde, zutrauliche Spinnen und jede Menge Liebe.Mellick hat hier eine Geschichte über die erste große Liebe, deren Explosivität aber auch ihre Gefahren und auch ihre Vergänglichkeit, der bevorstehenden Alltäglichkeit geschrieben. Ich fand sie jedenfalls sehr unterhaltsam und sie hat sich wirklich gut gelesen. Die kleinen und größeren Explosionen in der Geschichte sind zwar eindrucksvoll in Szene gesetzt, sind aber gut auszuhalten. Im Umfeld dieser Story wirken sie lange nicht so brutal wie die eines Edward Lee oder Wrath James White, wobei man hier auch beachten muss, dass es ein völlig anderes Genre ist.In dieser Liebesgeschichte gibt es natürlich auch Sex, nicht viel, aber dieser hat es definitiv in sich und hiermit meine ich nicht die Obszönitäten, wie jetzt vielleicht einige meinen könnten.Ich lehne mich jetzt mal ganz weit aus dem Fenster und behaupte, dass dieses Buch sogar für Jugendliche geeignet ist, zumindest für etwas ältere. Sicherlich geht es im Buch recht gut zur Sache (Blut/ etwas Six) aber dennoch glaube ich, dass Jugendliche, die etwas für solche Art der Liebesgeschichte, eine sehr bizarre, übrig haben, hier sicherlich eine kurzweilige Lektüre finden würden.Fazit:Every Time We Meet at the Dairy Queen, Your Whole Fu**ing Face Explodes ist ein gutes Mellick Buch. Es macht Spaß, unterhält und gibt einem zu denken. Es betrachtet das Thema Liebe auf eine sehr skurrile Art und Weise, ist durch und durch verrückt und unterhält wunderbar. Es ist kurzweilig und gut verständlich.Mir hat es jedenfalls sehr viel Spaß gemacht diese Geschichte zu lesen und die nächste Mellick-Anschaffung ist geplant.Die Art der Erzählung ist allerdings nicht für jeden etwas. Irgendwie ist es eine Art Horror-Fantasy, wobei der Fantasyteil überwiegt.Von mir gibt es jedenfalls für diesen kurzweiligen Spaß volle Punkte.
Yes, I did rate this five stars. In this genre, if there really is one, of punked out, gore-ridden, horrifying and god-awful hilarious bizarro fiction, Mellick is a star. While this is the first book of his I have read, I have several others waiting in the wings. This one, I couldn't resist the title, and the cover was simply hilariously fascinating to me. Such a juxtaposition of horror and cuteness melded so sweetly, I had to read it.The story doesn't require suspension of disbelief, just forget that idiom. This story just presents itself and you either follow along with the impossible or you don't. I did.I admit, I went from finding it hilarious, to being grossed out, to marveling at CMIII's imagination, to concluding that this author is one sick puppy, and I may have been part of that litter. I would love to share what goes on after Spiderweb's first facial explosion, but it would be all spoilers. If you are willing to just let go and enter the mind of a truly creative, aberrant and imaginative author, and have a strong stomach, then I recommend this book highly. If you are easily grossed out, stay away. Also, if your sense of humor runs to the more mundane use of clever wordplay, or parody, or even slapstick, this is likely not for you either.Very highly recommended for those members of a select club of readers who love to laugh at the most absurd, gross and grotesque things imaginable.
What can way say about a heart warming tale of exploding faces? Well, I can say that this book is much more than just a book with a goofy title. It is heartwarming, gross, and scary all at the same time. Ultimately, I really loved it. I think it is in my top 5 CM3 books! But I will definitely be reading it again and again to make sure!This book made me feel warm and gooey, like eating a freshly baked chocolate brownie, but before you finish it, you grab the other half and smear it all over your face, poke it up your nose and stick in in your ears. Then, while you are sitting there barefoot in Dairy Queen with brownie all over you and people staring at you confused, a spider crawls across your bare foot and startles you. Yep. Mixed emotions. Like a Blizzard of M&Ms and thumb tacks. DRINK IT!! 5/5 Stars. Another unforgettable CM3 Masterpiece.
For my money, Carlton Mellick can do no wrong. And this book is another in the long line of amazing novels I’ve read by him.I don’t intend to spoil any of the twists and surprises inside this slim volume, but if the title seems a bit too gimmicky for you, I want to assure you that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There’s nothing that you gleam from the title and the back cover that isn’t fully fleshed out (pun intended) in the first chapter. From the basic premise we are whisked away. And it gets WEIRD. Wonderfully, weird.And as is apparent in most of Mellick’s work, regardless of the bizarre nature of the story, the emotional core of these characters remains colorful and rich and relatable and, in the case of this book, quite innocent. So not only is this a fun-loving gross-out Bizarro body-horror tale, but this is a story about young love. And about how that young love reshapes us over time.Touching. Funny. Disgusting. And surprisingly affecting.I read this in one sitting. It was a great book.
Carlton Mellick is by far the most consistently entertaining author I have ever read, regardless of genre. His stories always range from great to brilliant and "Every Time We Meet..." is no exception. Once the setup to the story begins, things sort of go as expected and it felt as if Carlton has pulled back on the reigns a bit, but the heart of the narrative is so well done, it did not matter that this story felt more mainstream than usual. The characters were a delight to read and felt completely authentic. The dialogue had such a believable ring to it that I had flashbacks to grade school and all the peer pressure and bullies and first crushes came flooding back in my memory. Where Mellick really hit it out of the park was the ending here, and some jaw-dropping concepts he introduces involving the male protagonist. Truly amazing work. Not my favorite Mellick, but in the top 10 for sure.
This is the gooiest love story I have ever read. It may also be the only love story I have ever read. I cannot resist the world of Carlton Mellick III, and the word "cute" is taken to a whole new dimension in this book. (Really, read the cartoon in the back.) Puppy love turns to full-blown detonation, which is carefully mended through honesty and sincere concessions. This may be the most unconventional tale of bonding you will ever read, but the narrator is guaranteed to win your heart. Join him through the stages of his unusual romance. And maybe wear a raincoat.
